Furthering Impact | Developing Research | Providing Opportunity
Reading would not be the excellent and successful University it is today without the generous support we have received over the years from our alumni, friends and supporters, often in the form of legacies.
In 1913, a £10,000 legacy from George William Palmer (the equivalent of around £600,000 today) enabled the building of our first library, and his bequest of the Elmhurst Road sports ground gave the college its first foothold in what was to become the Whiteknights campus. In 1936, Alfred Palmer gave The Acacias, the former Palmer family home, to the growing University. More recently in 2003, a generous legacy from Miss Sheila Bolton enabled the building of the new special collections store, which houses the University’s rare book, manuscript and archive collections.
Of course, a legacy does not have to be as big those of the Palmer family or Sheila Bolton to make a difference. Even a more modest legacy gift can transform a young person’s life by providing bursary funding, or the books or equipment needed for them to continue their studies. Your legacy gift can be used to support any aspect of the University’s work – from funding our world-leading research into climate change or heart disease, to developing the Harris Garden or the Library, to providing much-needed hardship funds or travel grants for students.
We hope that you will consider joining the growing number of alumni, staff and friends who have already confirmed that they have left a gift in their will to the University. Everyone who pledges a legacy to Reading is invited to join the Palmer Society, ensuring that you receive invitations to special events and updates on the impact of legacies. The Patron of the Palmer Society is Andrew Palmer, CVO, CMG, great-grandson of Alfred Palmer.
By remembering Reading in your will, you will join this proud tradition of legacy giving, and play a vital part in the University’s future.
