Help us to recognise outstanding volunteers

The annual Distinguished Volunteer Award aims to recognise the outstanding contribution that volunteers make to the University. Our IMAGINE campaign set out to inspire supporters to give 60,000 hours of their time by 2020. Last year 1,450 amazing volunteers gave nearly 19,000 hours of their time in a wide range of ways: from alumni mentoring current students and guiding them in their chosen career paths, to student conductors in a University-led community choir helping local children to find their voices.

If you know of a volunteer who goes above and beyond to make a difference to the University community, we would like to hear from you! You can make a nomination until 4 October 2019.

The awards will be presented at the House of Lords Alumni Reception on 8 November 2019. Award recipients will receive one ticket for themselves and one for a guest (normally priced at £60 each) and will be able to enjoy this popular event in the stunning House of Lords. The award will also be announced in supporter and alumni publications.

Making a nomination

You can nominate someone by completing our short online form.

You can nominate someone for a Distinguished Volunteer Award under one of two categories:

  • 1. An individual (not necessarily a graduate) whose volunteering has a direct and significant impact on the work of the University. For example, through activities including, but not limited to, offering mentoring or work experience, acting as an international student ambassador, participating in student talks or supporting research or fieldwork (outside of usual job activities).
  • 2. A Reading graduate, current student or staff member whose volunteering makes a contribution to a particular field, furthering the University of Reading’s good reputation.

All nominations submitted before 4 October 2019 will be considered by a panel of representatives from the University, who will submit a shortlist for final selection to the Vice-Chancellor. Please note: your nominee will not be informed of their nomination by the University unless they are selected to receive an award.
