Calum Rogers BA Classical Studies 2014

Biography

I work at Costain, a civil engineering firm, based in Maidenhead. I began working in the work winning team, that secures contracts for designing, building, upgrading and other engineering works, but I'm also working with UAVs ('drones') to bring them into the business.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Reading?

The campus was great and I really enjoyed the introductory day and lectures.

What was the best bit about living and studying in Reading?

Being allowed to run off with mad maverick ideas like doing essays on rats and mice in Roman cities with the approval of tutors.

What top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?

Go to the careers centre workshops and seminars. You're already paying for them with your fees anyway!

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

I'm presenting UAV technology at a company conference in October, so I'm having a think about what to say.

What would be your top tips for students interested in working in this sector?

Civils/construction is open to all kinds of people. There's another classics graduate recruit from the 2015 intake who works in procurement for a huge highways engineering job. Don't be scared of looking outside of what your degree topic traditionally leads to.

How has the University of Reading and the Careers Centre helped in your chosen career path?

Massively. On top of CV/cover letter writing tips, they'll give you suggestions on how to build your experience and skills, hold practice interviews tailored around the role you're applying for, and more.

What are your top tips for students graduating this year? What should they be doing to secure the job they want?

Go to the careers centre events. I can't stress this enough!

What does the University mean to you and what is your favourite memory?

Working at an archaeological dig in Naples with other students from around the world, and making an enormous tiramisu.
