Charlotte Broomfield-Payne (BA Fine Art 2012)

Biography

When I left university I didn't have a clue what to do next. I was fortunate enough to have my cafe job which I had kept throughout my time at Reading. I was promoted to technical manager and gained first hand experience with business. I then focused on my art, found a studio and am now making money from paintings. I am now about to start as an Artist’s Assistant in London

Why did you choose to study at the University of Reading?

I liked the campus, and the course sounded academic in its methods of teaching art.

What was the best bit about living and studying in Reading?

The summer and sitting out by the lake with the art gang. Creating wacky performances and art pieces which got more and more crazy as we sipped our snake bites.

What top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?

Be ready to work but social antics are absolutely key in having a great time at University. Always say yes and try to see and do everything.

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

I'm a technical manager and freelance artist. I am currently undergoing an interview process to become a successful artist and Designer’s Assistant in London. I worked hard and was promoted to a management position at my café - being dedicated to your Saturday job can really help. It’s been fantastic experience and superb on my cv. I’ve learnt a lot about business. The freelance art side is thriving. I’ve been lent free studio space and I have always been supported by a local art community and will continue to be. I have sat tight and waited for opportunities to come that I am actually interested in;  they are there but you have to look hard, fill in a lot of applications and attend a lot of interviews. I am careful that I don't fall into something I have no interest in. There is no hurry and I am fortunate enough to come across my dream.

What would be your top tips for students interested in working in this sector?

Talk to people

What are your top tips for students graduating this year? What should they be doing to secure the job they want?

Try and intern whilst at University.

What does the University mean to you and what is your favourite memory?

It's made me who I am and my favourite memory is with my art clan admiring our degree show and what we had achieved, having a BBQ with the tutors and having a pint!
