Javed Hussain Khan (MA Linguistics, 1989)

Tell us briefly about yourself and career.

I am a University Professor with 34 years of experience. I have been the Head of the Department since 30 June 2008.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Reading?

I had applied for an ODA-sponsored Bursary and was among the 09 selected from India in 1988-89. I was offered admission on MAAL (Testing) at the University of Reading.

What was the best bit about living and studying in Reading?

We had good accommodation made available to us, a good University Library and other Support Facilities, and good teachers.

What top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?

Please make most of your stay there by using the excellent facilities there for your studies while also enjoying yourself.

How did you benefit from spending a year abroad / a year in industry?

Learnt a lot about the benefits of autonomous learning.

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

I am close to my superannuation. I retire from my university position on 14 August 2017.

What would be your top tips for students interested in working in this sector?

Reading is a good university to be in. Even the local population of the city is supportive. Teaching is a good profession and Reading prepares you well for it.

What are your top tips for students graduating this year? What should they be doing to secure the job they want?

Equip yourself well for your preferred profession.

What does the University mean to you and what is your favourite memory?

A good university worth going to.
