Lamar Moore (MSc Cybernetics 2011)

Biography

I am a software engineer who has a strong passion for science and technology (specifically robotics).

Why did you choose to study at the University of Reading?

I have always been thrilled with the field of Robotics/Systems Engineering. The University of Reading is highly regarded for its research in this area so I was very eager to apply to this University.

What was the best bit about living and studying in Reading?

There are two sides to Reading which balance each other out very nicely. During the day, Reading can be very quaint and peaceful which is wonderful for studying. However, the night life is second to none in the UK and offers a great opportunity to unwind after tough exams and long study sessions.

What top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?

Just walk around the town, get to know Reading. Don't just stay tucked away in your dorm room or house share. You will miss out if you do.

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

I am currently a Software Engineer in a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the University of Sussex and Photek Limited.

What would be your top tips for students interested in working in this sector?

Pay close attention to the small and subtle details of your studies. Everything is built on the basics and you will come back to them every day in your working life.

How has the University of Reading and the Careers Centre helped in your chosen career path?

The Careers Centre has made a wealth of information available which assisted me in locating jobs within industry which were suited to my course and skill set. This takes the guess work out of interviews because you can arrive with confidence knowing you are qualified.

What are your top tips for students graduating this year? What should they be doing to secure the job they want?

They should try to schedule as many interviews as they can. They should also try not to limit themselves to a single sector or physical location. You would be surprised how interdisciplinary most sectors have become within recent years. Hardly anything is practiced in isolation anymore.

What does the University mean to you and what is your favourite memory?

I felt like I received so much while I was there. Great tuition, attentive lecturers, helpful tutors. Everything was designed to make the experience as painless as possible. My year undertaking the MSc at Reading University will stand out in my mind as one of the best years of my life. My favourite memory is seeing snow for the first time and throwing snow balls around the parking lot with my partner.
