Dafni Sifnioti (MSc Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate 2009)

Dafni is currently our International Alumni Ambassador for Greece

Biography

Even though my Bachelor Degree is in Geology, I always tried to connect it with Atmospheric Sciences. Throughout the MSc in AOC, I was given the opportunity to do that in many ways.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Reading?

There were two main reasons of my choice:
1) The Meteorology Department is one of the best on the subject
2) The syllabus of the Master seemed to me rather intriguing and multidimensional.

What was the best bit about living and studying in Reading?

The best thing is that I now can say that I have friends from all over the globe! Besides that, it was amazing to walk through the campus during the morning and another plus was that the town was pretty close, 15minutes walk from my house!

What top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?

Explore every opportunity that you might have in learning something from joining a club to doing some language classes or getting help from the tutorials (on varying subjects) at the Library. The University Staff seemed rather helpful so don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions etc.!

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

I am now a PhD Candidate on Coastal Oceanography & Meteorology in University of Athens, Greece. Once more, I am combining Geology with Meteorology!

How has the University of Reading and the Careers Centre helped in your chosen career path?

The knowledge that I gained from the MSc has proven rather helpful throughout the course of my PhD. My experiences as a student at the University of Reading helped me improve as a professional and as a student as well.

What are your top tips for students graduating this year? What should they be doing to secure the job they want?

Here are some: 1) Register to the Careers Centre, 2) Register as an Alumnus/a, 3) Look out for the MOOC organized by the University and finally 5) Always look out for the job that will interest you the most!!!!

Why did you decide to give to the University of Reading?

From the moment I graduated, I registered as an Alumna! I am volunteering to help out prospective students from my country, to join Reading University by sharing my memories with them!

What does the University mean to you and what is your favourite memory?

I have two wonderful memories actually: 1) in December 2008, everything in the campus was covered with snow, even the lake was frozen and it was just beautiful, 2) the day that I found out that I got my MSc!!!!
