Roberta Anderson (MA History 1993)

After Reading, I did a PhD with University of West England. I have been Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at Bath Spa University since 1994. I am a FHEA and FRHistS and a Teaching Fellow.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Reading?

I simply liked the course offered there.

What was the best bit about living and studying in Reading?

I never lived in Reading so never really got into the social life of the University.

What top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?

Be aware of time management - travelling up from Somerset for classes meant I had to learn this ... and quickly!

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

I have a PhD in Jacobean Diplomacy and teach early modern history.

What would be your top tips for students interested in working in this sector?

Get your PhD and then be prepared to teach anything and everything wherever you can until a permanent job comes up.

How has the University of Reading and the Careers Centre helped in your chosen career path?

I needed an MA to do my PhD and this was the most interesting MA around.

What are your top tips for students graduating this year? What should they be doing to secure the job they want?

Go for it and do whatever it takes - jobs won't just fall into your lap.
