Robert Linnell (MSc School Management 1989)


Originally an apprentice engineer, I moved first into training as a social worker, and then as a Secondary teacher by 1974. Various promotions then followed in different schools in the Surrey/ Hampshire area until I became a Head-teacher in 1992. I retired from headship in 2009 and developed my own consultancy business in the same year, which is now very successful

Why did you choose to study at the University of Reading?

It was the right course at the right time

What was the best bit about living and studying in Reading?

MSc was studied part time as I had a full time role as a Secondary School Deputy Head!

What top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?

Plan ahead - and enjoy the challenge

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

I am now the owner of a consultancy company, Enabling Education Ltd, working within the education sector. I am also a Non Exec Director of the education recruitment business, the Eteach Group Ltd

What would be your top tips for students interested in working in this sector?

Always do the right things for the right reasons, your personal/ professional values are important.

What are your top tips for students graduating this year? What should they be doing to secure the job they want?

Looking very early in the course for the next steps to employment. Carpe Diem!

Why did you decide to give to the University of Reading?

40 years of successful work delivering education and school leadership must mean that I have something to offer future generations of teachers!
