Su Sayer (BSc Chemical Physics 1969)


I co-founded the charity United Response 40 years ago. It now employs over 3500 staff and helps people with disabilities across the UK. I have also been on the Boards of a number of charities and several Governmental Boards. I am a senior visiting fellow at Cass Business School, City University and on the SUEI advisory board.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Reading?

It had a course that I was interested in, the campus was new and it was a great location.

What was the best bit about living and studying in Reading?

There are so many beautiful places within easy reach of the University of reading, It is so accessible to London and also Oxford.

What top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?

Make sure you create a balance in your time at university. Make the most of your union, of the various clubs and sports. You will make friends that will last a lifetime. Treasure them.

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

I am CEO of a charity. I recently was honoured with a CBE for my work with disabled people in the UK.

What would be your top tips for students interested in working in this sector?

Make your CV as interesting as possible...put in all the voluntary work you have ever done. Demonstrate your passion for the cause and show that you have lots of ideas. Enthusiasm is a big plus!

How has the University of Reading and the Careers Centre helped in your chosen career path?

The friends that I made at Reading have been an invaluable support throughout my career.

What are your top tips for students graduating this year? What should they be doing to secure the job they want?

Do your research and show that you are passionate about the business that you are applying for. Show that you have ideas and there is something different that you may have to offer. 

What does the University mean to you and what is your favourite memory?

Many wonderful friends. My favourite memory is a surprise 21st birthday party at Sonning!
