Tara Williams (MSc Development Studies 2003)

I live and work in Austin, Texas. I currently work at the LIVESTRONG Foundation, a global non-profit that helps people with cancer and inspires them to take action. I have been with this organization for seven years and love helping people. It is very inspiring.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Reading?

I had a professor from my undergrad studies who recommend I apply to the University.

What was the best bit about living and studying in Reading?

Experiencing the culture and meeting new and interesting people.

What top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?

Enjoy it and take every chance you can to meet new people and learn from your instructors and classmates.

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

I came back home to Texas after I graduated and was interested in the non-profit sector. The Foundation I work for is based in Austin and it worked out that I got a job there not knowing where it would lead. It has been great.

What would be your top tips for students interested in working in this sector?

Do an internship, identify the organizations you are interested in and try and connect with non-profit professionals to learn about their experience.

What are your top tips for students graduating this year? What should they be doing to secure the job they want?

Start early to identify the organizations/companies you are interested in. Do internships and take advantage of the career centre and seek out people who are doing something similar. Find a mentor.

What does the University mean to you and what is your favourite memory?

The university was part of an amazing experience studying and living in another country. I learned a lot living outside my comfort zone. When I think back on that time, I find always happy memories. I am proud to say I got my MSc at Reading.
